why – poem

April 16, 2014

Why attempt the mountain
Dare the Everest peak
Track the dangerous lioness
Disdain easier prey to seek
What fool treads barefoot
Across searing coals of fire
Some men understand
That danger fuels desire

So life is filled with questions
to answer if we please
are you a man or a mouse I ponder
and answer, “Please pass the cheese.”

  1. I think that somewhere in between is rather a nice place to be.

  2. This made me laugh! Give me cheese any time (but then I do live on the border between Switzerland & France).

    • You must recommend some good cheese for me to try.
In July my wife and I will be visiting for a few weeks, landing in Basel and staying in Dijon šŸ™‚

thanks for stopping by. We really are different people at different times, hence the two stanzas šŸ™‚

  3. Haha..i love the last line please pass the reminds me of that book who stole my cheese..and certainly the easy way out..but not the passionate way in…smiles Bill..and enjoy that Peak…2..:)

    • the first stanza is who we are on the internet, the second in real life… a bit cheezy šŸ™‚

  4. Ha! I’m from Wisconsin – of course I love cheese! Just because we have serious things to consider doesn’t mean we should take ourselves too seriously. This is terrific!

    • Hi Mary, my wife is a big packers fan, I think a cheese head will someday land under our Christmas tree šŸ™‚

Glad you liked the poem. Sometimes our internet persona is all bravado and our real life isn’t quite as grand šŸ™‚

I really like this poem. Casual, humorous but full of meaning.

Thanks for stopping by to visit.

Even in type A personalities, meekness has a home, finds a place; akin to gentleness, compassion–but it has a bumpy ride when the carnivorous beasts of stress, anger, adventure stir up the nest. I respond to the softness here, uncrushable, resilient.

  7. Ha! That is quite an interesting perspective with that dosage of essential humor.. witty and well-penned. šŸ™‚

  8. lol….a good one..

  9. Ha…so you’re a mouse. There are a lot of mice masquerading as dangerous lions. You are not one of them. Good for you !

  10. Clever, poetic, well stated, and quite enjoyable! Excellent work.

  11. Cool and clever response to the challenge bw!

  12. Lovely Bill, I see you as a lover not a fighter.

  13. A sharp and tasty poem! šŸ˜‰

  14. I love the last line, but it still holds the question: man or mouse? Aren’t we all a bit of both?

I am a cheese person too – nevertheless i will endevour to cross the (cheese) mountain…
    Anna :o]

  16. I am smiling at your response, good one šŸ™‚ ~ And I am munching on one right now ~

  17. Given my own love of cheese, I better watch out for mousetraps! šŸ™‚ Great poem!

  18. Does the same go for a woman? Thanks for sharing this poignant reminder

  19. ‘Are you a man or a mouse?” I always ask my father this – just to tease.
Then I pass him the cheese :))
    Cool poem…

    • A lifetime ago, when I played rugby, my roomate was a burly man with wild bushy beard. Sometimes right before the match, he would shout “Are we MEN or MICE” then stare fiecely about with wild intensity, only to wait a few seconds and meekly say “Please pass the cheese”. It still cracks me up.

I had cancer a year or so ago… and I understand. I also see that your mom is an artist, and artists capture that inner beauty which is the best of all treasures. wishing you good health

  20. I’m going to guess that it was the man who asked for cheese, because the mouse would have been more specific on the kind šŸ™‚

  21. Ha, yes, we are all, at times, both man and mouse, are we not?

  22. ha. i would say my mouse or man-ness is situational
there is something to the humility of the mouse though
    in many circumstances…

  23. danger fuels desire…ha.. maybe there’s a middle path to walk….smiles

  24. So life is filled with questions
    to answer if we please

Life is such that challenges check us along the way! Giving answers may not be easy. Nicely billgncs!

  25. Living dangerously – or simply a death wish!

    • Hi Eric – I was waiting for someone to comment so I could say when people ask me if I am a man or a mouse I say “Please pass the cheese” šŸ™‚

      • Bill!

It’s morning here and you made me spill my tea all over my keyboard – what a great chuckle you gave me, my friend šŸ™‚
